Originally, the Giro d'Italia 2024 wanted to ride over the Stelvio Pass at an altitude of 2758 metres on the 16th stage. However, the recent snowfall, followed by rising temperatures and the associated risk of avalanches, made it impossible to pass the giant pass. The stage was therefore changed.
Instead of the Stelvio Pass, the Umbrail Pass is now on the programme. The Giro d'Italia is therefore making a short detour into Switzerland. From Bormio, the route does not go all the way up to the Stelvio Pass, but instead takes the turn-off towards the Umbrail Pass, which at 2498 metres is also the new Cima Coppi, the highest point of the Giro d'Italia 2024.
From the Umbrail Pass, the route heads down into Val Mustair in Switzerland before the Giro returns to Italy at Confine. From there, the route then leads through the Adige Valley to Bolzano as originally planned, before the big finish awaits with the mountain finish on Monte Pana (St. Christina in Val Gardena).
