Sporting goods giant Decathlon has made headlines in the road bike market in recent years: a few years ago, the company surprised the industry with high-quality complete bikes, and its involvement in the World Tour shows that the French are serious. Now comes the next foray into expansion, this time with components: With the inexpensive carbon wheels of the Van Rysel brand for retrofitting, the aim is to win over owners of other racing bike brands. The VR50 come with hub technology from DT Swiss and a modern rim shape, the workmanship is impeccable and there is no trace of a cheap look.
The VR50 also has no technical weaknesses. They do a good job in the test field, are mid-range in terms of weight and offer competitive stiffness values. The warranty of only two years is somewhat meagre, but replacement spokes are included in the package. The wheelset is only available with a Shimano HG or SRAM freehub as standard, but Campagnolo or Microspline versions can also be retrofitted to the DT hub. The VR35 with lower rims is also available as an alternative for the mountains.
