With the Sharq GR and Soniq GR, Fulcrum presents two wheels that have been specially developed for modern gravel racing. Both models use a rim with a 30 millimetre rim width; the differences lie in the weight and price.

Topics in this article

Fulcrum developed the two wheel models on the basis of race data and experience from international gravel competitions. The new Sharq GR and Soniq GR complement the existing Sharq- and Soniq models and focus on a clearly defined discipline: gravel racing with wide tyres and high speed on rough surfaces.

Rim and aerodynamics

At the heart of both models is Fulcrum's well-known 2-Wave technology, which allows tubeless tyres without additional rim tape, with a rim with an extra-wide 30 millimetre rim width and mini-hook. The variable rim profile measures between 47 and 52 mm in height and, according to the manufacturer, is designed to optimise airflow and reduce crosswind sensitivity. The rim harmonises with modern 47 to 50 mm gravel tyres. ISO-compliant, even wider tyres can also be fitted.

Fulcrum approves certain 45 mm tyres after internal testing, although this size is not currently ISO-covered. An updated list of validated 45 mm tyres can be found at fulcrumwheels.com. The 30 millimetre wide rim creates more volume and enables finer adjustment of the tyre pressure. The maximum tyre pressure is 3.5 bar and must not be exceeded.

Fulcrum Sharq GR

The Sharq GR uses FF100 carbon fibre and has a total weight of 1,550 g. The hubs work with classic cone bearings, the spokes are aerodynamic knife spokes. The 2:1 spoking pattern is designed to ensure responsiveness and precision. The 2-Way-Fit technology dispenses with a drilled rim bed, making the wheel tubeless-ready and eliminating the need for rim tape.

Fulcrum Soniq GR

The Soniq GR uses FF80 carbon and weighs 1,695 g. The hubs are equipped with sealed industrial bearings with adjustable bearing play. Round spokes are used instead of flat spokes. This model also features 2-way fit technology with an undrilled rim well for tubeless mounting without additional rim tape.
