The Trek Checkpoint ALR 5 is a sporty gravel bike. Although it is a little heavier, the motto is "ride fast". It is a super hybrid of road bike and gravel bike.

Topics in this article

Trek has a unique approach to geometry. The Checkpoint in the aluminium version has the longest frame in the large comparison test and offers an uncompromisingly sporty riding position. Surprisingly, the reach of the carbon SLR model is almost 3 cm shorter, which you wouldn't expect from a road bike model. However, you can still adopt a bent-forward position to exert pressure on the pedals and press the front wheel firmly to the ground. With advanced riding technique, you can ride safely and quickly over any terrain. Pedalling also takes the strain off your back, as the rear of the bike is not very flexible - unless you are not sitting with your full weight on the saddle.

Similar to the 3T Exploro Primo, you also benefit from the stretched position, which improves the comfort of the handlebars. Although the measured values are below average, bumps from below are cushioned well and short bumps can be easily compensated for with arms and legs. However, there can be hard bumps after a jump. For experienced cyclists, the seating comfort in combination with this position could still be considered suitable for long distances, but relaxed cruising is not its strong point.

Faster is always possible, even with the Trek Checkpoint ALR 5

To get the most out of the bike, it may be necessary to fit a larger chainring. Thanks to the asymmetrical chainstays, there should be enough space for this. The gear ratios of a single crankset represent a good compromise. In addition to the short head tube, which is visually reminiscent of Trek's top aerobikes, the large number of threads for luggage is striking. However, the bike is certainly not a stoically quiet and comfortable travelling companion.

This is where the gap to cyclocross closes. On the Trek, it's hard not to step on the gas, despite the aluminium frame and two pounds too much. Anyone who enjoys riding technique, adrenalin and coms on forest tracks will find a hybrid that is half road and half gravel.
