The sprung BMC URS is one of the most innovative gravel bikes on the market, but its comfortable design often does not appeal to sporty road cyclists. The new BMC Kaius is now aimed at the more demanding among them.
The Kaius sets itself apart from the familiar URS by focussing on the essentials: The sportily positioned model feels more at home on easy terrain and at high speeds; suspension elements are missing, as are mounting options for mudguards. The frameset was built primarily with the aim of being light and stiff.
According to BMC, the frameset including seatpost and cockpit should weigh 1785 grams. Nevertheless, the frameset is said to be robust for the toughest conditions and the structure has been reinforced in critical areas. Aerodynamics is also a major topic: all equipment variants come with aero rims and aerodynamically integrated bottle cages, while the top model BMC Kaius 01 ONE even has a flat handlebar unit.
The riding position is, appropriately, decidedly sporty and stretched. The handling of the BMC Kaius is based on the proven URS; the long frame with short stem is designed to improve stability on rough surfaces. The bike can take tyres up to 44 millimetres wide, and the Kaius is supplied with 40 millimetre Pirelli tyres.
The frameset is prepared for a dropper post, but a suspension stem - a proprietary design that BMC introduced this year - can also be fitted as an option. There are also attachment points for smaller bags.
The range consists of just three models, which are equipped exclusively with SRAM drivetrains, and starts at a high level: the Kaius 01 THREE comes with SRAM Rival AXS 2x12 and Reverse carbon rims and costs just € 5499. The top model with SRAM Red AXS 1x12 and Zipp 303 costs 11499 euros.
