The peloton at the Giro Donne 2021
The Giro Donne is the longest stage race for women. In 2022, the tour will once again be part of the UCI Women's World Tour. Find out everything you need to know about the Giro d'Italia Donne, which was known as the Giro Rosa before 2021.

When does the Giro Donne take place?

The race will be held from 30 June to 10 July 2022 and 24 teams have confirmed their participation.

Return to the Women's World Tour

Due to the lack of live pictures in 2020, the Giro Donne 2021 was stripped of its World Tour status. New organisers took over the organisation of the race for 2021, so live images were available for the first time last year. This included the last 15 kilometres or so of each stage and the finish line ceremony, including the first interviews. This provided the necessary impetus for the organisers of the Giro Donne, PMG Sport/Starlight, to ensure 120 minutes of live coverage every day in 2022. When asked why there was no live coverage of the Giro Rosa before 2021, Roberto Ruini from PMG Sports/Starlight replied as follows:

I don't know what happened before 2021, because we've only been organising the Giro Donne since 2021. Last year, we complied with the UCI's requirements in terms of media coverage. Today we are part of the UCI Women's World Tour again and offer more live coverage than required by the UCI with 120 minutes a day.

Where will the Giro Donne be broadcast on TV?

The organisers guarantee worldwide media coverage. In Germany, the Giro Donne can be seen on Eurosport.

Tour de France Femmes as competition?

The Giro Donne is the biggest stage race for women. After a long break, there will be a Tour de France for women again in 2022 - Le Tour de France Femmes. This extends over eight stages and 1029 kilometres. There are only 14 days between the two races. This raises the question of the extent to which there is competition between the two events. Ruini explains that the Tour de France Femmes is a strong sign that women's cycling is growing rapidly. There is no competition between the Giro Donne and the Tour of France, rather he sees it as a stimulus. The organiser cites the opportunity to jointly promote women's cycling and the races as an advantage.

Together with the UCI, the organiser is already discussing a new position for the Giro d'Italia Donne in the women's cycling calendar, so that in future there will be a suitable time slot between the Tour de Femmes and the Giro Donne. The date of the men's Giro d'Italia is not decisive for this. What is relevant is that the date fits into the women's calendar.

This is how much money there is to earn

250,000 euros in prize money is up for grabs this year at the Giro Donne, with 50,000 euros going to the winner. The same amount of money awaits the professional female cyclists in the Tour de France Femmes.

The event organisation sees the amount of prize money and the high visibility across various media thanks to the agreement with Discovery as two great signs that something is happening in women's cycling.

Sandra Schuberth, sometimes an after-work ride, sometimes a training ride, sometimes an unsupported bikepacking challenge. The main thing is her and her gravel bike - away from the traffic. Seven Serpents, Badlands or Bright Midnight: she has finished challenging bikepacking races. Gravel and bikepacking are her favourite subjects, and her demands on equipment are high. What she rides, uses and recommends has to stand the test of time: not in marketing, but in real life.
