First German stage win at the Giro d'Italia Women 2024: Liane Lippert (Movistar Team) has won the difficult 6th stage over 159 kilometres between San Benedetto del Tronto and Chieti. The 26-year-old, who had to abandon Stress fracture in the femoral neck bone who only started the season at the end of April, came out of a breakaway group to secure her first victory of the year and her tenth success overall as a professional - among other things, Lippert had won a stage in the Tour de France Femmes in 2023.
I am so happy and liberated. This victory is for everyone who believed in me and helped me on this long journey. - Liane Lippert
In the sprint of a group that was still three riders strong at the end, Lippert narrowly beat Ruth Edwards (Human Powered Health) into second place, with Erica Magnaldi (UAE Team ADQ) in third. The group of favourites followed 21 seconds later, led by overall leader Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl-Trek), who confidently defended her pink jersey. Another German, Antonia Niedermaier (Canyon//SRAM Racing), made it into the day's top 10 in eighth place. Niedermaier crossed the finish line at the same time as Longo Borghini, jumping up to fifth place in the overall classification and also retaining the white jersey for the best young rider of the 2024 Giro d'Italia Women.
After the start in San Benedetto del Tronto on the Adriatic coast, a closed railway crossing initially caused some excitement. The peloton had to stop briefly. After that, little happened for a long time on the ride into Abruzzo. Temperatures of 37°C made things difficult for the peloton. Although there were numerous attacks, a breakaway group was initially unable to break away. On the descent from the Penne climb (3rd category), Elise Chabbey (Canyon//SRAM Racing) suffered a serious crash, slipping off in a right-hand bend and skidding into a fence. The frame of her racing bike was broken, but Chabbey was able to resume her ride with a new bike.
Shortly afterwards, around 40 kilometres before the finish, a group with Ruth Edwards (Human Powered Health), Ane Santesteban (Laboral Kutxa - Fundacion Euskadi), Liane Lippert (Movistar Team) and Erica Magnaldi (UAE Team ADQ) went clear.
With 31 kilometres to go, Lotte Koepcky (Team SD Worx - Protime) attacked. But Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl-Trek) countered immediately. After that, Team FDJ-Suez took over for Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig at the front of the peloton, but not with the necessary consistency. The lead of the breakaway quartet continued to grow. At the start of the final climb to Chieti it was a good 2:20 minutes. However, it melted away threateningly by the finish. Five kilometres before the finish it was only 1:30 minutes.
Three kilometres before the finish, Kopecky attacked Longo Borghini again and took the counterattack from the woman in pink. But the Italian didn't get away either. Both looked at each other, the other favourites came back and the breakaway quartet was no longer in danger. Liane Lippert started her sprint 150 metres before the finish from Magnaldi's rear wheel. Ruth Edwards came up strongly again, but was no longer able to catch the Friedrichshafen rider.
