The 6th stage leads through the region south-east of Naples on small and, above all, winding roads. Among other things, it circles Mount Vesuvius. However, the Valico di Chiunzi is passed after just under 50 kilometres. With a length of 8.3 kilometres and an average gradient of just over six percent, the 2nd category climb is the biggest natural obstacle of the day.
After a short counter-climb, the route heads downhill again before a category 3 climb has to be tackled after 96 kilometres. After that, not much more happens from a topographical point of view.
The route also calms down somewhat with the passage along the Gulf of Naples. In between, the route once again leads over smooth old stone paving in Naples. However, the absolute finale, the 900 metre long finishing straight, is once again asphalted and nine metres wide.
This stage can perhaps best be described as the calm before the storm, as the first mountain finish is scheduled for the following day after more than 218 kilometres. Nevertheless, the stage will not be a rest day. At least not for the sprinters, who will decide the victory among themselves in Naples. In the finale, the sprinters will once again battle it out for the stage win and the Maglia Ciclamino.
Before that, however, the early mountain classification of the 2nd category should lure out all those who are holding on to the mountain jersey. However, this will not prevent a bunch sprint. Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo), Jonathan Milan (Bahrain-Victorious), Fernando Gaviria (Movistar) and Michael Matthews (Team Jayco-AlUla) have.
A relatively short and easy stage allows the riders to sleep a little longer. The neutral start does not take place until 12.55 pm. Those who are still not fully awake have another 9.5 kilometres through Naples to shake off their tiredness. Then the start is sharp.
