Wahoo Fitness is expanding its product portfolio with the KICKR RUN, a smart treadmill with innovative RunFree mode. The technology enables runners to change their pace without controls by allowing the treadmill to recognise the athlete's position and adjust the speed automatically. With incline simulation up to 15 per cent, gradients up to 3 per cent and a maximum speed of 2:30 minutes per kilometre, the device is aimed at ambitious runners and triathletes.

Wahoo Fitness, known for its training equipment in the cycling sector, is entering the market for intelligent treadmills with the KICKR RUN. The new model, which was launched in August 2025, is set to fundamentally change indoor running. At its centre is the innovative RunFree mode, which allows runners to change their pace without touching any controls. Instead, a sensor system detects the runner's position on the running surface and adjusts the speed in real time. "I've been working behind the scenes with a very talented group of Wahooligans for over 7 years to develop the KICKR RUN - so I'm very excited to see it come to market," explains Chip Hawkins, founder of Wahoo Fitness. The manufacturer promises a running experience that comes closer to outdoor training than previous treadmills. Similar to the KICKR Smart Trainer, which Wahoo introduced for cyclists more than ten years ago, the KICKR RUN is set to usher in a new era of indoor training for runners. The device integrates seamlessly with virtual training platforms such as Zwift Run, Rouvy, MyWoosh and the Wahoo SYSTM app, allowing runners to automatically sense incline changes as they complete virtual routes.

Wahoo KICKR RUN with innovative RunFree technology

The centrepiece of the KICKR RUN is the RunFree mode, which is based on advanced position detection technology. A high-speed motor reacts in milliseconds to the runner's position on the running surface, enabling natural changes of pace without manual adjustments. According to Wahoo, the runner's feet determine the speed of the belt, not the other way round. An integrated "time-of-flight" sensor ensures that the runner remains centred on the treadmill. For users who still prefer manual control, the KICKR RUN offers user-friendly control paddles that can be tapped while running without interrupting the rhythm. This target speed control makes it possible to train at the exact pace prescribed by a structured training programme. With a maximum speed of 2:30 minutes per kilometre, the device is also aimed at competitive athletes who want to train at competition pace. According to the manufacturer, the quiet operation of the treadmill, even at maximum speed, is particularly noteworthy.

Realistic running simulation

To simulate the feeling of outdoor running, the KICKR RUN has several functions designed to make the running experience more realistic. The responsive surface provides a natural energy return to help runners progress at their normal outdoor pace. An innovative lateral incline function of up to 0.5 degrees simulates the natural unevenness of a road and challenges the running muscles in a similar way to off-road running. The treadmill can also simulate inclines of up to 15 per cent and declines of up to 3 per cent, which adjust automatically when connected to compatible apps. This makes it possible to virtually recreate hilly routes. The automatic alignment function ensures that the treadmill is always optimally adjusted. This combination of reactive running surface, lateral incline and incline simulation is designed to free runners from the traditional limitations of conventional treadmills and provide a more natural running experience.

Comprehensive connectivity of the Wahoo KICKR RUN

The KICKR RUN is designed for seamless integration into the existing Wahoo ecosystem and external training platforms. It supports connectivity with software platforms such as ZWIFT, Rouvy, MyWoosh and the Wahoo SYSTM app for virtual training. It is also compatible with Final Surge, Kinomap, Humango and TrainingPeaks, with the prospect of further integrations in the future. Connectivity options include WiFi, Bluetooth and Direct Connect for a stable connection. For use during training, the treadmill has an integrated tray for laptops or tablets and bottle holders for hydration. An integrated USB-C port enables devices to be charged during training. The KICKR RUN can also be connected to other Wahoo products such as heart rate monitors and smartwatches to provide a comprehensive training experience. The intelligent treadmill functions enable structured workouts with automatic speed and incline control via third-party applications.

Availability and presentation

Wahoo Fitness plans to present the KICKR RUN with live demonstrations at selected events such as the Berlin Marathon. Interested runners and triathletes will have the opportunity to test the intelligent treadmill for themselves and experience the RunFree technology. The manufacturer is positioning the KICKR RUN as a structured training tool designed to help athletes improve their performance and achieve their goals. "As passionate runners, we wanted to create the most realistic experience possible and develop a tool that helps people improve, train more effectively and ultimately become better athletes who achieve their goals," says Chip Hawkins. The KICKR RUN joins the Wahoo Fitness product range, which is aimed at endurance athletes and already includes smart trainers for cyclists, sensors and software. By entering the smart treadmill market, the company is expanding its offering for runners and triathletes and emphasising its ambition to change the way people train.
