The Tortour is one of the largest and best-known ultra-cycling events in Europe. The main race covers 1000 kilometres and several Alpine passes. It is a challenge that requires a great deal of athletic and logistical preparation and is so demanding that only a few athletes are able to complete it. However, the special attraction of the Tortour lies in the option of slowly pushing yourself to your personal limits. For the 1000-kilometre distance, a 250-kilometre lap is cycled four times, for the 500 twice, and of course it can also be completed just once.
A slow introduction to ultracycling is therefore possible. The Tortour Myself format is even easier: you can ride a 50-kilometre lap as often as you like within a given time frame. A perfect opportunity to test your own limits in an organised setting. The route covers around 760 metres in altitude and is mainly on small roads. The start and finish are in Küssnacht, not far from Zurich. The route runs between Lake Zurich and Lake Greifensee. The starting signal is given at 8 a.m. on Saturday, and collecting laps ends at midnight at the latest. As you pass through the starting town of Küssnacht after each lap, catering is very simple.
The short version of the Race Around Austria offers a taster ride in ultracycling. The ultra-cycling race follows a 560 kilometre route along the Upper Austrian border. 6500 metres of altitude promise a real test.
The Ruhr2NorthSea Challenge offers a gentle introduction to the long distance. 300 flat kilometres promise lots of fun and little suffering, and thanks to the eight refreshment points, you don't need to worry about nutrition either.
Freedom is at the centre of the Superrandonées. The prepared routes can be ridden at any time. For 8 euros, you get a route map, a frame sign and the GPS track for the Ötztal tour. The 10,500 metres in altitude and 613 kilometres are just as tough as they sound.
