"Our Giro" is the name of the project that the training software RGT launched with The Cycling Podcast and Veloviewer on 9 May - and which aims to encourage amateur cyclists to cover virtual kilometres by the end of the month. The concept: sections of all stages of the Giro d'Italia 2020 are available as 3D tours on RGT for all amateur cyclists worldwide - free of charge, as RGT has suspended the monthly flat rate for premium access of previously €14.99 until further notice at the start of the coronavirus crisis.
The stages are not held at a fixed time as a mass start race, but can be completed by all RGT riders within three days at any time. While the first stage, the opening time trial in Budapest, can be ridden in exactly the length of 8.5 kilometres intended for the professionals, the other daily stages are shortened - who wants to regularly spend five hours or more in the saddle in their living room? Some of the eight daily sections presented so far, such as stage number three, do not even take original Giro routes. However, many highlights, such as the mountain arrival on Mount Etna, are part of "Our Giro". All stages are available for three days as soon as they are released in RGT; the order does not have to be adhered to. The leaderboards will be published on Veloviewer published.
A small drawback of the realisation: the road environment is not fully animated. Similar to the user-generated Magic Roads (Read more in our RGT test report), only the gradients and bends are modelled on the original track, the familiar 3D-animated landscape around it slowly fades out a few metres after the road wheel. This takes a little of the fascination out of the tracks, but is all too understandable given the already immense programming effort involved.
