Three clubs from the region between the Rhine plain and Kaiserstuhl organise a stage competition that combines different route characteristics in a points-based overall ranking. The format has established itself as a fixed date in May in the southern German amateur and junior scene. Each of the three stages has its own requirements and appeals to different types of riders. Those who do not have a racing licence can take part in hobby races on the first two stages.
The 52nd Wyhl Bike Race opens the Cup on 23 May on a 1.25 kilometre circuit in the industrial area. The flat course allows for high average speeds and ends on a 200 metre long finishing straight. The compact layout makes the race easy for spectators to follow, and the racing atmosphere can be experienced from almost any position along the route.
For amateur cyclists without a licence, there is a hobby race over 24 laps and 30 kilometres on a closed course. The start is at 16:30, late registrations are possible until 16:00 on race day. The format also allows last-minute participants to take part.
The GP of the Achkarren winegrowers' cooperative on 24 May is considered the most challenging stage of the weekend. The course through the vineyards of the Kaiserstuhl combines twisty passages with tough climbs and technically demanding descents. The route makes the second stage a selection race that is likely to play a key role in the battle for the leader's jersey. Those who saved energy on Saturday will have to deliver here.
The 65th Leo Wirth Memorial Race in Merdingen concludes the Cup on Whit Monday. The undulating circuit with constant changes in speed is considered a classic on the South Baden racing calendar. In the event of a tie, the overall victory will be decided by the position in Merdingen, which makes the final stage particularly important. The overall victory ceremony will take place afterwards.
The overall classification is based on points from all three stages. The route concept calls for versatility over three days: a flat criterium, a mountain stage and a classic road race demand different skills. Those who are only strong on one stage will have a hard time. The cup is aimed at riders from U15 to elite and master classes.
The races lead through one of Germany's most famous wine regions and combine ambitious racing with a regional character. For spectators, the Whitsun weekend offers short distances, spectator-friendly routes and a supporting programme with catering on all three race days.
Clubs, helpers and spectators transform the Whitsun weekend into a cycling festival year after year. Well-known cycling stars from the region regularly do the honours, whether as spectators, supporters or well-wishers at the award ceremonies. The proximity between junior, amateur and professional sport lends the event its authenticity and gives the Cup its supra-regional appeal. With its mix of promoting young talent, top amateur sport and traditional venues, the Kaiserstuhl-Tuniberg Cup is becoming a fixed date in the Baden cycling calendar.
