The cycling marathon series has been organised since 1990 and includes a particularly large number of events in its 35th season. In a press release, BDR Vice President Bernd Schmidt is pleased about the willingness of the BDR clubs to participate in this important series: "For the first time since Corona, there were again more applicants than places. Anyone who rides five cycle marathons in the series will receive the exclusive Cycle Marathon Cup finisher jersey free of charge. Super finishers are those who cross the finish line in 10 of the 21 cycle marathons.
For most events in the Cycling Marathon Cup, it is still possible to register a few weeks or days before the event. However, the Rhön Cycle Marathon organised by RSC Bimbach will definitely be sold out again in 2024. Last year, 5,300 cyclists came to Bimbach for the marathon and RTF event. In 2023, two routes were offered that were over the marathon distance of 200 kilometres, as well as other shorter laps. Registration is not yet possible. Last year, the registration portal opened in January.
The Cycling Marathon Cup is a BDR series. In Germany, a cycle marathon is defined as a cycle ride of at least 200 kilometres without timekeeping on public roads. This definition was specified by the German Cycling Federation. Distances of less than this are categorised by the BDR as RTF, i.e. cycle touring. In most other countries, a cycle marathon or Gran Fondo is a timed cycle race. The roads are rarely fully closed in Germany and Austria - but there is usually a partial closure and protection with marshals or escort motorbikes.
