Nauders is currently a hub for cyclists from all over the world. The GIRODAYS offer a week-long programme of events centred around the cycle marathon, before the 33rd Dreiländergiro gets underway at 06:30 on Sunday 28 June.
Participants can choose between two routes. Both routes cross the Stelvio Pass and pass through Austria, Italy and Switzerland.
The shorter route, Stelvio, Vinschgau, covers 120 kilometres and 3,000 metres of elevation gain. It leads from the Reschen Pass in Austria via Prad to the Stilfserjoch (2,797 metres above sea level), which is ascended via 48 hairpin bends. The route continues via the Umbrail Pass into the Münstertal valley in Switzerland, before heading back to the Reschen Pass via Laatsch – the final section runs along the historic Via Claudia Augusta, offering views of Lake Haider and Lake Reschen.
The longer version, Stelvio Engadin, stretches over 168 kilometres and 3,600 metres of elevation gain. It shares the opening stage with the Vinschgau Route, but after descending into the Münstertal valley, it continues over the Ofen Pass into the Engadin. After around 70 kilometres through the Engadin countryside, the route ends with a final climb to the Norbertshöhe on the Austrian border.
The GIRODAYS programme includes group rides, social rides, workshops and talks by experts. Participants can have their performance assessed and undergo lactate testing. An expo area, side events on the festival grounds and a pasta party on the eve of the race round off the programme. Among the sporting highlights of the week are the night race through Nauders and the Race Across The Alps, which takes ultra-cyclists to the Reschen Pass. Supporters and guests at the Dreiländergiro can enjoy a cheering zone at the Stilfserjoch, live music and other ways to follow the event. The entire region is involved in the event.
