Garmin presents two new bike computers, the Edge 550 and 850, which are characterised by their compact shape and a brilliant LCD display. The Edge 550 is operated via buttons, while the Edge 850 also offers a touch display. Both models have intelligent nutrition alarms which, in conjunction with optional sensors, take into account the current fitness level, the requirements of the route as well as temperature and humidity to calculate the optimum amount of carbohydrates and fluid during an activity. For better orientation, the devices provide real-time weather information based on weather radar and wind direction data from weather stations received via the paired smartphone. The GroupRide functions have been further developed so that cyclists can now also compare statistics such as heart rate, power or cadence with the group average. GroupRide can also be used to organise group rides, share routes and stay in contact with all participants during the ride. Both models are available now, with the Edge 550 costing €449.99 and the Edge 850 €549.99.
The new Edge models offer extensive functions for performance analysis and training optimisation. Cycling ability provides an insight into your own strengths as a cyclist and compares these with the demands of a route, making it easier to assess what lies ahead. The Stamina function tracks performance during cycling training and shows the energy available during a physical activity. With Power Guide, cyclists can find the optimum power input for a route and its elevation profile to create a performance strategy. For structured training, the devices offer adaptive or ready-made Garmin Coach cycling training plans. "To make training even more personalised, selected plans are even adapted based on performance and health data," says the Garmin press release. After an activity with linked electronic gears, the Edge models show detailed analyses of the time spent in the respective gear ratio.
The Edge 850 offers several additional functions compared to the Edge 550. In addition to button operation, it has a responsive touch display for alternative operation. A built-in loudspeaker enables voice announcements during the ride, and the integrated bell function allows cyclists to make themselves heard. The Edge 850 also supports contactless payment via Garmin Pay, so there is no need to carry cash. "Thanks to contactless payment, you can enjoy the freedom of travelling without cash. It's a great feeling to be able to be spontaneous and independent anywhere and at any time," explains Garmin in the press release. Another unique selling point of the Edge 850 is the integrated route planner, which allows routes to be planned quickly and easily directly on the device - even without a smartphone or internet connection. The new filter option in the route library also makes it easier to search for routes that have already been planned.
Both Edge models attach great importance to safety functions. The integrated bell helps to attract attention. Information about hazards such as potholes or fallen trees can be shared with the community, while notifications about new obstacles are also displayed on the Edge. These hazards are also displayed in the route planner to make route planning safer. For additional safety while driving, both models offer functions such as LiveTrack and accident detection and are compatible with the Varia product line. The Connected Features enable smartphone music control, smart notifications and customisation options via Connect IQ. For navigation, innovative functions such as Trendline Popularity maps and information on busy roads or surfaces are available to ensure reliable route guidance.
The new Edge models are characterised by their compact design and are equipped with a high-resolution LCD display, which should be easy to read even in direct sunlight. The Edge 550 is operated exclusively via buttons, while the Edge 850 also has a touch display that can also be operated with gloves. Both devices have an internal memory for maps and activity data. The battery life is not explicitly stated by Garmin, but should be in the range of comparable models. The devices are compatible with various sensors such as heart rate monitors, power meters and electronic circuits. Connectivity includes Bluetooth and ANT+ for connecting to sensors and Wi-Fi for synchronisation with Garmin Connect. The Edge 850 also features NFC for contactless payment via Garmin Pay. Both models are IPX7 waterproof and therefore protected against rain and splash water.
