Lennard Kämna was born in Wedel (Schleswig-Holstein) in 1996. Kämna grew up in Fischerhude in the district of Verden, near Bremen. He came to cycling through his father Gerald and his brother John Kämna. Lennard Kämna began his professional cycling career in 2015 with Team Stölting. He stayed there until the end of 2016 before racing for Team Sunweb for three years. From 2020 to 2024, Kämna was under contract with Bora-Hansgrohe and Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe before moving to Lidl-Trek.

Kämna proved his talent early on. In 2014, he became world champion in the junior individual time trial in Ponferrada. At the Vuelta a Espana 2017, he attracted attention at the age of 20 with an eighth place in the individual time trial on the 16th stage. A short time later, he secured the team time trial title with Team Sunweb at the Road World Championships in Bergen, Norway. He also took silver in the U23 road race behind Benoit Cosnefroy from France.

The North German drew attention to himself again at the 2019 Tour de France with a sixth and a fourth place on two mountain stages before starting the 2020 season for Bora-Hansgrohe.

Stage wins at the Tour de France, Giro d'Italia & Vuelta a Espana

There he won a stage of the Criterium du Dauphine in August 2020 and shortly afterwards the 16th stage of the Tour de France in Villard-de-Lans - his greatest success to date. He was also second on the 13th stage. This was followed by a stage win in the Tour of Catalonia in 2021 and the Ruta del Sol in 2022. Kämna achieved another stage success at the Tour of the Alps and triumphed on Mount Etna in the Stage 4 of the Giro d'Italia. In 2023, Lennard Kämna completed his collection at the Vuelta a Espana, where he finished the 9th stage at the Collado de la Cruz won. This means he has won stages in all three major national tours.

Lennard Kämna and the overall ranking project

Lennard Kämna set himself new goals for the 2023 season. The German professional cyclist wanted to establish himself as a classification rider. He made his first attempt at the Giro d'Italia, which he was to ride for the overall classification. In preparation for this, he finished Tirreno-Adriatico already in 4th place in the classification and temporarily wore the leader's blue jersey. A few weeks later he won a mountain finish at the Tour of the Alps and finished the stage race in 6th place in the overall standings. At the Giro d'Italia, Kämna finally made it into the top 10 overall. In the end, he finished in ninth place.

Accident on Tenerife

In 2024, Kämna wanted to shine again at the Giro d'Italia. But nothing came of it. At the beginning of April, he collided with a car while training in Tenerife. In the accident, which was not the fault of the North German, he suffered severe chest trauma with rib fractures and a bruised lung, among other injuries, and was out for the rest of the season. The German switched to Team Lidl-Trek for the 2025 season.

Kämna has often struggled with health problems during his career. The North German took his first break from professional cycling in 2018. Another break followed at the end of May 2021.
