On the Stage 2 of the Tour de Suisse 2024, Emanuel Buchmann was involved in a crash around 1500 metres before the finish. The German champion remained on the ground afterwards and was taken to hospital. Bora-Hansgrohe announced late on Monday evening that examinations had revealed a fracture of the hip and collarbone. Both injuries require surgery.
This means that the 2019 Tour de France fourth-placed rider will be out for a long time. Buchmann is contesting his last season for Bora-Hansgrohe. The Raubling-based racing team and the mountain specialist will go their separate ways after this year, as team boss Ralph Denk recently announced in a media round: "Emanuel has communicated to the team that he no longer wants to ride for us. His management has also told me this," said Denk, announcing at the same time: "We will end this professionally, he will also get his assignments and his chances."
The 2nd stage of the Tour de Suisse was won in a sprint by Frenchman Bryan Coquard (Cofidis). Alongside the Criterium du Dauphine, the race is regarded as the final endurance test in the run-up to the Tour de France, which starts this year on 29 June in Florence. The tour of Switzerland runs until Sunday.
