Garmin’s new GPS cycle computer is designed to be operated via voice commands and offers additional route-planning options. The 3.5-inch display remains the same, whilst the casing is smaller and lighter. Here’s what the Edge 1060, priced at €799.99, has to offer for road cycling training and gravel rides.

Editor’s conclusion

Voice control is the most interesting new feature of the Edge 1060: being able to call up ride data or set a navigation destination without having to touch the display could make it easier to use whilst on the move. For road cyclists, the more compact dimensions and the ability to choose routes with as few stops as possible are also appealing. Whether voice commands are reliably recognised even at high speeds, in a headwind and on gravel remains to be seen in a practical test.

Start a recording, check performance data or set a navigation destination without tapping the screen: the new Garmin Edge 1060 is designed to let you do all this via voice commands. Alongside the built-in microphone, a more compact casing and additional route-planning options are among the key changes compared to the Edge 1050.

“OK Garmin”: Voice commands instead of reaching for the screen

Voice control is activated by saying “Okay Garmin”. Among other things, this allows you to retrieve and have your journey details read out, select pre-loaded routes or search for points of interest along the route. It is also said that hazard warnings can be triggered by voice command.

On a road bike, for example, this feature could help you check data during a training session without having to switch to another screen. On a gravel ride, one possible use would be to search for a place to stop for refreshments. However, how reliably this works also depends on the environmental conditions: Garmin expressly points out that the performance of the voice control may vary depending on riding conditions. Furthermore, it is only available in selected languages.

To send text and voice messages, the Edge 1060 requires a paired, compatible smartphone and the Garmin Messenger app. The cycle computer is therefore not a standalone mobile messaging device. The built-in speaker also provides navigation and training instructions and acts as a digital bell.

Same display, smaller casing

The LCD touchscreen still measures 3.5 inches and has a resolution of 480 × 800 pixels. However, Garmin has housed it in a shorter and slightly narrower casing: according to the spec sheet, the Edge 1060 measures 58.5 × 107.0 × 16.3 millimetres and weighs 142 grams. Compared to the Edge 1050, this is 11.5 millimetres shorter and 19 grams lighter. The case thickness remains unchanged. The new cycle computer is operated via the touchscreen and buttons.

By way of comparison: we reviewed the previous large Garmin model in the article on the Edge 1050 with LCD display presented.

The stated battery life figures remain unchanged. Garmin states up to 20 hours during intensive use with active navigation and paired sensors, and up to 60 hours in power-saving mode. Actual battery life depends on usage and settings.

Route selection for training rides and gravel tours

When calculating a route, drivers can choose between popular routes, the quickest route, the route with the least elevation gain, or a route with few stops and junctions. Several suggestions can be compared in advance. A route preview provides information on, amongst other things, distance, estimated journey time and reported hazards.

For consistent road cycling rides, the option with as few interruptions as possible is particularly appealing. It could help you find a route where traffic lights and junctions are less likely to disrupt your rhythm. Whether the suggested routes actually suit your training needs will have to be seen in practice.

The pre-installed cycle map contains information on tarmac and unpaved roads and paths. Routes can be planned directly on the device, even without a smartphone or an internet connection.

“Up Ahead” displays selected waypoints along the route, including their distances, such as cafés, drinking water points or cycle shops. This can make it easier to plan refreshment stops, particularly on longer road cycling and gravel tours. ClimbPro also provides information on upcoming climbs, even without a pre-loaded route.

Training features and advanced group comparison

Familiar features such as Stamina, Power Guide and Garmin Coach remain available. Stamina estimates your remaining energy reserves whilst you’re exercising. Power Guide helps you plan your effort based on the route and its elevation profile. Additional sensors may be required, depending on the feature.

According to Garmin, the data screens for workouts and segments have been redesigned. They are intended to present key performance data and upcoming training sections more clearly. Training plans can be synchronised with Garmin Connect and TrainingPeaks, amongst others.

GroupRide is being enhanced with additional comparison options: heart rate, power and cadence can now be compared against the group average. A compatible smartphone and Garmin Connect are required for the connected group features.

Many essential training and analysis features are not limited to the top-of-the-range model. Our article on offers an overview of the more compact devices Garmin Edge 550 and 850.

Other devices charge, but only when stationary

A new feature is the reverse charging function: the Edge 1060’s battery can be used to charge, for example, a smartphone or compatible lights. A suitable USB-C cable is required for this.

Important for long rides: According to Garmin, this feature is expressly not intended for charging whilst riding. It is therefore more of a backup for when you take a break. How much power remains afterwards for navigation and recording depends on how much of the charge has been used.

Price and availability

According to the manufacturer, the Garmin Edge 1060 is now available at a recommended retail price of 799.99 euros. The package includes a standard mount, an aero mount, a strap, a charging and data cable, and a quick start guide.
