Sweet Protection delivers with the Memento RIG Photochromic one of the few full-frame models in our sunglasses test. The Swedes' aim with the Memento was to combine a casual look with sporty features. To achieve this, Sweet Protection has given its sunglasses a large panoramic lens and a particularly strong curvature in order to achieve the most comprehensive face coverage and best protection for the eyes.
Despite its full frame, the weight of the Memento remains within reasonable limits at just over 30 grams. There is no direct adjustment option to adapt the glasses to the shape of the head. However, the Memento comes with a total of three different nose bridges that can be used to customise the fit. We got on best with the narrow bridge. The low adapter allows the goggles to be positioned a little lower on the face - good for low-profile helmets.
Sweet Protection also provides the standard equipment of a hard case and goggle bag. The lens is equipped with effective anti-fog protection and covers filter categories 1 to 3, with the slightly violet initial tint being the strongest compared to the other test candidates. This means that very little light falls on the eyes when driving at dusk.
Thanks to the generous rubber coating on the temple tips and nose bridge, the Sweet Protection sits quite comfortably and without pinching. However, the wide nose pads feel a little sweaty in warm temperatures. Despite the full frame, all-round visibility is surprisingly good. Only when you look to the side does the frame come into view a little, but this doesn't really bother you. The off-road grip is also impressive. The Memento sits securely without bouncing around during wild rides.
What we didn't like so much: The brackets wobble a little in their mount, which is a slight criticism considering the rather high price.
In terms of wind protection, we would have expected less from the Sweet Protection and were pleasantly surprised at how reliably the full-frame goggles protect against the wind. But the fact is that the Memento has both a rather strong curvature and a lens that reaches close to the cheeks. The other side of the coin: because the Sweet Protection lacks effective anti-fog protection, the lens can sometimes fog up a little in hot situations.
The tinting speed is also not exactly outstanding. While the Sweet Protection still darkens pleasingly quickly, the filter takes significantly longer to lighten again. The Memento only manages 16.5 per cent in 30 seconds and is therefore one of the worst performers.
Good vision, adequate protection, comfortable to wear - but very slow brightening.
Despite the full frame, the Memento offers a wide field of vision and good protection from the wind thanks to the strong curvature. The violet filter is pleasantly high-contrast, but dark overall and brightens very slowly. Thanks to good rubberisation and interchangeable nose pads, the goggles are easy to adjust and fit quite securely off-road. Somewhat wobbly temples.
