Gravel races present cyclists with contradictory demands: On the one hand, they need the power transmission of a road shoe for long, efficient pedalling sections, while on the other hand, traction off the beaten track is essential - be it for muddy passages, river crossings or technical terrain. With the new S-PHYRE RX910, Shimano now presents a gravel shoe that combines these conflicting requirements in one product. You can find our test of the predecessor model S-Phyre XC903 here. The shoe was developed with the support of Shimano gravel pros like Pete Stetina and, according to the manufacturer, offers unrivalled power transfer, walking stability and all-day comfort in a streamlined package.
"You can race gravel with a road or mountain bike shoe, but for optimal performance we need a light and stiff shoe with a solid contact surface for consistent power transfer, plus the ability to handle the occasional run or muddy race," explains Pete Stetina, Shimano pro gravel racer who was involved in the development of the RX910. The RX910 is not a compromise solution between a road bike and a mountain bike, but a completely new solution developed specifically for the unique requirements of gravel competitions.
The centrepiece of the RX910 innovation is the new Pontoon cleat system. This feature comprises a pair of modular, interchangeable TPU contact blocks designed to significantly improve the shoe-pedal contact point and optimise power transfer. The system enables a road bike-like pedal interface with simultaneous SPD compatibility and off-road capability.
"For me, the Pontoon cleat system is the most exciting aspect of this shoe," says Stetina. "You now have the stability and power transfer of a road shoe while retaining the off-road benefits of mud repellence and quick engagement of SPD." Unlike conventional outsole-mounted contact blocks, the RX910's pontoons are part of the cleat interface itself. This means they move with the cleat position - vertically or laterally - for consistent support and efficiency, regardless of how the cleats are set. What's more, the pontoons are interchangeable, so riders can start every race with a solid shoe-pedal interface.
The RX910 is ideally designed for combination with Shimano SPD pedals. The PD-M9200 and PD-M8100 models are particularly recommended for seamless power transmission and two-sided entry, which can be crucial on demanding climbs and technical terrain.
The S-PHYRE RX910 features a stiff carbon sole with the highest stiffness rating of 12 out of 12 for maximum power transfer. The seamless midsole construction reduces stack height and improves foot stability. For river crossings and rain rides, dual drainage holes are integrated to drain water while providing ventilation on hot rides.
The TPU lugs on the outsole are lightweight, designed to repel mud and provide sufficient traction for technical off-bike terrain. The anti-twist stabiliser heel cup keeps the foot locked in place during explosive sprints and long efforts. The dual BOA Li2 closure system allows for a micro-adjustable fit and secure hold while riding. The enveloping upper is comfortable, breathable and designed for long-term durability.
Weighing 304 grams (size 43), the shoe is available in black, white, blue and deep sea colours. Standard sizes range from 38 to 48, with half sizes from 41.5 to 46.5 and widths from 40 to 48. The retail price is 480.00 US dollars, 419.95 euros or 369.99 pounds sterling.
Although designed for elite gravel racing, the RX910 is an excellent choice for performance-oriented riders looking for a shoe that combines road efficiency with off-bike comfort. Whether racing in Kansas, taking lesser-known routes to the local coffee shop or exploring off-road, the RX910 is a compelling option that offers both performance and comfort.
The RX910 is available worldwide through Shimano dealers and distributors and online at ride.shimano.com. The official market launch will take place on 28 August 2025, underlining Shimano's position as an innovation leader in the field of specialised cycling shoes and responding to the growing demand for high-performance equipment in the booming gravel segment.
The creation of the RX910 is based on the real-world needs of elite gravel athletes like Pete Stetina and builds on years of Shimano product innovation in road, mountain bike and gravel-specific bike technologies. By working closely with active racers, Shimano has been able to identify and address the specific challenges of gravel racing.
The combination of maximum power transmission through the stiff carbon sole, the innovative Pontoon cleat system and the sophisticated design for off-road suitability makes the RX910 a specialised tool for ambitious gravel enthusiasts. With this shoe, Shimano takes account of the increasing professionalisation and specialisation in the gravel segment and offers a technical solution that is specially tailored to the requirements of this growing discipline.
