Road bike overshoes from Gorewear put to the test

Cold feet? Dirty shoes? Even the toughest winter cyclists are annoyed when frost makes their toes tingle painfully and road grime covers their beautiful cycling shoes in an increasingly thick crust of dirt, kilometre after kilometre. Road bike overshoes, on the other hand, are the remedy of choice - but the range on offer is so large and confusing that it is difficult to choose the right overshoe.

The latest contenders for buyers' favour are the Shield Thermo Overshoes from Gorewear. To find out what they are capable of, we put the bright orange cuffs on our well-worn summer trousers for a test. Our initial conclusion after thirty kilometres at plus three degrees: the tight-fitting overshoes provide good protection against wind and moisture, but they are not particularly warm; whether you keep your feet warm depends more on your choice of socks.

The overshoes are very easy to put on and take off thanks to the elastic Infinion material and the zips on the inside of the sides for a good grip, even with somewhat chunkier gravel shoes with a treaded sole. The cut-outs for the pedal plate and heel are neatly seamed and relatively robust, but frequent or longer walking passages on rough surfaces can still chafe the edges.
