Cold protection at the front, greater heat dissipation at the back: Q36.5 combines differently constructed material zones with an integrated balaclava in the new Vampire Hooded. This close-fitting road cycling jacket is designed for use in temperatures ranging from zero to ten degrees Celsius. The stated weight is 292 grams in size Medium.

Different materials for cold-weather rides

When it comes to winter clothing, heat retention and moisture wicking are often at odds with one another. The Vampire Hooded is designed to resolve this conflict through a construction tailored to specific areas of the body. According to Q36.5, the jacket was developed for the Pinarello-Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team. Its cut is designed to accommodate the forward-leaning position on a road bike and fits close to the body.

In the front section of the torso and on the arms, the manufacturer utilises what is known as ‘Air Insulation’ technology with microfleece. These areas are designed to protect against the cold and aid moisture management. On the back and the inside of the sleeves, however, Q36.5 has omitted any lining to facilitate heat dissipation during exercise.

Waterproof membrane, non-laminated back

Q36.5 states that the waterproof membrane used has a water column rating of 10,000 millimetres. In addition, according to the manufacturer, the seams are fully taped on the outside. The back panel, on the other hand, is made from a non-laminated hybrid shell fabric, which is said to be more breathable than the sections fitted with a membrane.

This means the jacket does not have the same material construction throughout. The design is intended to balance weather protection and heat dissipation differently depending on the body zone. The water column rating mentioned refers to the membrane. The press release does not include a measurement of breathability or separate evidence of the waterproofing of the back section.

Balaclava under the helmet

A high collar is designed to protect the neck from the cold. The integrated balaclava can be worn under a cycling helmet. If the balaclava is not needed, it can alternatively be used as a neck warmer. Protection for the head and neck is therefore an integral part of the jacket and not a separate accessory.

Other features include an 8-millimetre-wide double zip and external reflective strips. The generously sized zip is designed to be easier to use whilst cycling. For the Storm Grey colourway, Q36.5 also features heat-transfer logos on the back.

Scope of application and availability

Q36.5 recommends the Vampire Hooded for cold and changeable conditions between zero and ten degrees Celsius. This range is a manufacturer’s recommendation, not a universal temperature guarantee. The type of clothing required underneath also depends on the level of exertion and your personal sensitivity to the cold.

According to the press release, the jacket is already available from the brand’s online shop and at selected cycle shops. Q36.5 does not specify a retail price in the press release. The information regarding weight, weather protection and thermal performance is provided by the manufacturer; this presentation is not based on any independent practical testing.
