Specialized and Lazer presented new models in spring with prices ranging from 110 euros to 375 euros. We were able to put new road bike helmets from Cratoni, Lazer and Kask on our heads straight out of the box for a first check - or at least put them on the scales: At 182.1 grams, the head protection from German manufacturer Cratoni is record-breakingly light.
The new C-Airlite is the lightest model in the Cratoni range. The manufacturer specifies a weight of 180 grams; we weighed it at 182.1 grams (size M). This makes the helmet one of the lightest on the market. We counted a total of 32 ventilation openings in the helmet shell, which should ensure a sufficient supply of fresh air. Size M fitted our tester perfectly with a head circumference of 58 centimetres, and the helmet, which is available in three sizes and five colours, impresses with its good all-round fit.
Belgian manufacturer Lazer has launched the updated Z1 Kineticore model for 2024. The top model with the in-house Kineticore rotational impact protection, in which small polystyrene bollards are designed to absorb the energy through lateral displacement and crushing, has become slightly lighter (232 grams in size M). The head ring width adjustment integrated into the helmet shell works smoothly and without locking. The cut-out at the back of the head ring is plait-compatible and the helmet is available in five colours and three sizes.
Oakley's ARO 7 with partially integrated visor, which can be parked on top of the helmet shell using a magnetic holder if required, is a combination of time trial and aero road helmet - in 2017, a flawless time trial helmet was presented under this name. The current version has a new ventilation system and should therefore provide a significantly better climate under the helmet shell. The size adjustment works via a Boa fit system and two sizes, M and L, are available.
For 149 euros, the Search model is a classic mid-range model from Specialized. It offers the rotational protection of Mips. Its high-quality workmanship is just as pleasing as the fit, which fits many heads without pinching. Typical of Specialized is the small adjustment wheel for the adjustment ring, which is somewhat more difficult to operate than larger adjusters, especially when wearing long gloves.
