Individual test: Helmet from Specialised
The designers at Spezialized reached deep into their bag of tricks to reduce the weight of the new "S-Works D2" helmet to 210 grams (size M). (TOUR 10/2007)

The designers at Spezialized reached deep into their bag of tricks to reduce the weight of the new "S-Works D2" helmet to 210 grams (size M): In addition to extra-light buckles and straps, EPS foams of different densities are used. The foam is denser and more stable at the structurally weaker edges of the helmet shell and less dense and therefore lighter in the upper area. The fit, comfort and ventilation of the "S-Works D2" are first class. The carrying system has been improved compared to previous models and holds the helmet securely on the head. However, the fragile lower edge of the front air opening raises a certain amount of suspicion, as it is likely to give way immediately in the event of an impact. Because the protective area therefore only begins above the opening, the helmet must be pushed strictly up to the eyebrows in order to fulfil the requirements of European Standard 1078, which applies to bicycle helmets. In addition, the "S-Works D2" covers significantly less head area than many competitor models and sat relatively high up on the heads of most testers. The helmet is available in 13 colours and comes with a clip-on shield.

PLUS: Very light, good ventilation, fit and comfort

MINUS: Sits high up on the head
