Do helmets for around 100 euros offer sufficient protection as well as good ventilation and comfort? 14 models had to prove their qualities in practical and laboratory tests.

The bad news first: you won't see the helmets in this test on the heads of professional cyclists - so identification with the professional pedallers "isn't", if that's important to you. The question is, however, whether it has to be such an outrageously expensive helmet (which, of course, professionals never pay for themselves). After all, if you have to fork out your hard-earned cash for a new helmet, you might want to consider whether you can get protection and style for your head for less money. Our current test helmets all cost around 100 euros. Does this mean you have to compromise on safety, comfort, handling or ventilation?

One thing is certain: There are no compromises when it comes to safety. All helmets, whether cheap or expensive, have to pass the same standardised test before they can be sold. A total of 14 manufacturers, from A for Abus to U for Uvex, accepted our invitation and sent in two helmet models each in sizes M and L for testing. You wouldn't know it from looking at the helmets that these are the manufacturers' affordable or mid-range models.
