The British company Newlane spent six years developing a helmet that can be folded up compactly. The basic version came onto the market at the end of 2024. The two-part folding design with a "flip-clip" mechanism allows it to be stowed away in a rucksack, handbag or laptop bag. Co-founder Dom Cotton explains: "Our goal from day one was to rethink urban helmet use. The helmet should be so practical that there are no more excuses not to take it with you."
The new version adds Mips technology to the foldable helmet. A low-friction inner layer enables movements of 10 to 15 mm in all directions in certain angled impacts. The system is designed to help redirect rotational movements of the head and reduce the risk of brain injuries. The collaboration with Swedish safety specialist Mips began in 2024, following initial contact two years earlier. Extensive prototypes and tests confirmed the compatibility of the two-part folding design with the Mips system.
Max Strandwitz, CEO of Mips, says: "We are delighted to be working with Newlane on this world-first foldable innovation. Developments like this make helmet safety more accessible and motivate more people to wear a helmet in everyday life."
