When warm thoughts alone are no longer enough in winter, you need a hat to protect your head from cooling down. At minus five degrees, an adult can lose up to 50 per cent of their body heat through their head. That's why there are special helmet caps for cyclists who also wear helmets in the cold season.
Road bike helmets are designed to ventilate the head well. However, what makes sense when cycling in the summer heat turns out to be counterproductive as soon as it gets colder outside. If you only have a little hair left, you will be complaining on the first days of autumn that the cold air blows mercilessly against your scalp through the ventilation slits. By winter at the latest, however, even the thickest head of hair will no longer protect you from the icy wind - high time for a helmet cap. We have taken a closer look at 13 current models.
Short & sweet
A helmet cap should protect you from the wind and still fit well. The best way to do this is with a model that is only equipped with windproof material on the forehead and ears. The most convincing solutions are offered by the caps from Gonso and Northwave. Among the models without wind protection, the Castelli cap scored best.
