The good news: even old helmets are still safe. This is shown by our standardised test on the test stand at Uvex in Fürth.

How long can you wear your bike helmet? According to some manufacturers' recommendations, no longer than three years. In our big helmet crash test, we put old helmets from TOUR readers to the test. We received the minimum number of three helmets for the standard crash test from TOUR readers for the following models:

We would like to thank the TOUR readers for their participation and the manufacturers mentioned for the new helmet models.

Hardness test on the bristle edge

The toughest test in the crash test in accordance with EN 1078 is the impact on a steel wedge that simulates a kerb. The maximum acceleration of 250 g must not be exceeded. Our test shows that the six to nine year old used helmets (red bar) remain well below this and their values have hardly deteriorated in comparison to the new helmets tested in 2010 (blue bar) - and are correspondingly safe.
