Bicycle helmets
If you have brains, you cycle with a helmet. But which shell will keep your head cool? And how much money do you need to invest? This test of 14 bicycle helmets in the 65 to 80 euro price range provides the answers. (TOUR 8/2003)

Imagine turning 20 and nobody noticing. That's what happened this year at helmet manufacturer Bell: in 1983, the US company presented the "V1-Pro", the first serious safety helmet for racing cyclists. With a hard plastic shell, simple polystyrene interior and simple straps, the original model weighed 450 grams, which was considered light at the time. Wearing comfort and ventilation were - compared to today's models - rather poor. Nevertheless, as a pioneer, the V1-Pro has an important place in the cycling helmet's line of ancestors.

Today, 20 years later, a helmet is an indispensable accessory for sporty cyclists. Not only for safety reasons - protective headgear is also playing an increasingly important role from a fashion point of view. Anyone who still rides topless today looks almost as exotic as the first helmet wearers in the 80s. No wonder, because the opponents of helmets have long since run out of arguments. Over the years, the clumsy eggshells of yesteryear have been transformed into feather-light, well-ventilated high-tech sculptures.

All helmets in this test
Alpina Thunder, Bell Alchera, Briko Tornado, Cratoni Zethos, Etto Spider, Giro Corius, Lazer Bullet, Limar F105, MET Tephro, Remline Sierra Nevada, Rudy Project Furya, Specialized Chamonix, Trek Superfly, Uvex Supersonic
