Specialized developed the Evade 4 in its in-house wind tunnel and tested the model with WorldTour teams. The 2.4 per cent improvement in ventilation was validated using a heated test head. According to Specialized, the aerodynamics remain at the same level as its predecessor.
The improvements over the predecessor are in the details. Nevertheless, it has to be said that the Specialized developers have really perfected the combination of cooling and aerodynamics. They should have, as the S-Works Evade 4 makes a considerable dent in your personal budget. The new high-end helmet is beautifully light and is so inconspicuous in every situation that even gravel and mountain bike professionals now rely on its aerodynamic advantages. - Jan Timmermann, test editor
The enlarged ventilation openings and the redesigned MouthPort increase the air supply. Internal 4D cooling channels channel the air deeper through the helmet. The padding with Mips Air Node Pro Pads is designed to improve sweat management. Specialised justifies the focus on cooling with the fact that lower head temperatures increase the body's performance.
The new helmet shape combines the geometry of the Evade 3 with findings from the Propero 4 and Ambush 3 models, while the BOA Fit System with FS2 technology enables micrometric 360-degree adjustment. The Tri-Fix 5 harness system is designed to improve harness guidance and the fit area. The design is aimed at better adaptation to the shape of the head.
The first Evade appeared in 2014 and established itself in Grand Tours, Monuments and World Championships. Specialized's factory XC and off-road teams also use the helmet for XCC races and long gravel events. The Evade 4 is designed to fit the new racing platforms such as the Tarmac SL9, Crux 5 and Epic 9. The development focussed on combining aerodynamics with comfort and ventilation without compromising on speed.
The shape of the ventilation openings and the surface structure are the result of wind tunnel tests in which the air flow was analysed. The helmet has a parking garage for goggles, price: 329 euros
