The BASIC Bikes innovation lab presents its latest invention: Gravel Spray On - the first spray-on dirt for bikes.

Topics in this article

Even before Hendrik and Jost, the founders of BASIC BIKES, started the Monster Gravel as a new addition to their product portfolio, they tinkered with the Quick Gravel. And then they found it, the perfect gravel mixture, gravel to spray on.

"We've always been asked by friends how we make our bikes look so nice and dirty," says Jost. Friends always get the same answer: "We ride our bikes a lot ourselves and test them hard off-road. That's why the bikes sometimes look really dirty."

Many remain sceptical. Especially in winter, when it's cold, many prefer to train indoors. Others don't have time to ride their bikes out of town and, according to BASIC Bikes, another crucial point is the fear of many that the paintwork and all the expensive parts could be damaged. But that's not how the bike tells adventure stories. This is exactly where BASIC Bikes Quick Gravel comes in: Spray-on gravel.

The idea for Quick Gravel was born

The idea came to the founders of BASIC Bikes after a long ride in Berlin's Grunewald forest. The dirt on Jost's bike was almost impossible to remove. Speaking of loosening, that could be the solution to the dilemma described above, Jost and Hendrik then thought. Then it was off to the lab. Here they worked on microparticles and a special nano-fluid, which together would form an adhesive layer. Applied to the bike, it enables the gravel dust from the bag to adhere perfectly to the bike.

In addition to microparticles, special fluid and ballast dust, the scope of delivery also includes a brush set and special tweezers. This allows dust and gravel particles to be precisely applied and smudged before a sealant fixes the dirt to the frame.

The result has been... is something to be proud of

Would you have believed it? The bike has never seen a mud puddle, let alone a forest track. Three bags of Gravel Spray On were used here to achieve this deceptively realistic result.Photo: BASIC BikesWould you have believed it? The bike has never seen a mud puddle, let alone a forest track. The more precise the work, the more realistic the result. Just look at the picture above. Who would have thought that the bike has never seen a muddy path?
