Like the carbon frame version, the Attain HPA SLX is also aimed at road cyclists who are looking for an affordable bike and are less concerned about weight. Like other bikes, the second cheapest model in the test is clearly approaching the 10-kilo mark.
In the € 2000 category, the HPA frame - an abbreviation for "High Performance Aluminium" - weighs more than average. In addition, the simple wheelset accounts for more than a third of the total weight.
Nevertheless, the low base price leaves financial leeway for an upgrade to lighter wheels and faster tyres. You should also consider replacing the cheap Shimano discs.
The handling of the racer is good-natured. Thanks to the very upright riding position and decent rear suspension, even longer laps can be taken under the standard tyres without neck pain. Although the maximum possible tyre width of 28 millimetres is officially exhausted, in practice slightly wider tyres fit through the frame and fork for more comfort.
However, special mudguards, which the manufacturer from the Upper Palatinate offers as an option for 40 euros, no longer have any place. In terms of build quality, the Attain can't quite keep up with the competition from Bocholt or Koblenz: While you can overlook visible weld seams on an aluminium road bike, the cables jingling inside the frame are simply annoying.
The Attain HPA is available in four equipment variants from 949 euros, our test bike with Shimano 105 mountain transmission is the top model. If you want it lighter: the cheapest Attain with a carbon frame weighs more than 600 grams less for a small surcharge of 300 euros.
Strengths: Suitable for long distances, optionally with mudguards
Weaknesses: High total weight, simple clincher tyres and brake discs
