Swedish manufacturer USWE has launched the USWE Race 2.0 hydration pack, which is even lighter than its predecessor and features a breathable design and the innovative 4-point carrier system. UPDATE: We have already carried out a test - our assessment can be found at the end of the article.

At the last edition of the Cape Epic in South Africa - our sister magazine BIKE reported in detail - not only could you see the prominent riders in the dust, but also the brand new USWE Race 2.0 hydration pack, which was handed out to all participants.

USWE has specialised in the development of hydration packs for mountain biking for some time now. While most models are large and primarily designed for downhill and freeride, USWE also offers the Outlander Pro, a very lightweight and minimalist backpack that is ideal for XC, gravel and racing. Now they are going one step further with the Race 2.0.

The Race 2.0 offers the same support on the back as all USWE backpacks with the patented 4-point "No Dancing Monkey" (NDM) retention system. USWE has also announced that the Race 2.0 packs are equipped with some improved features. These include an optimised mouthpiece for the 2-litre hydration bladder, a magnetic clip for the hydration tube system and an insulated sleeve to keep liquids cool in high temperatures. Another positive feature is the main material of the pack: it is made of nylon obtained from recycled ocean plastic. USWE is thus making a small contribution to keeping the environment clean.

The most important information about the USWE Race 2.0 bike backpack

Weight

The USWE Race 2.0 bike backpack weighs 230 grams, not including the hydration system and cover. The Outlander Pro 2 weighs a little more - 260 grams, even without a hydration bladder.

How do you like this article?

Aerodynamics

The hydration pack can help you to go faster - not only because it ensures a better water supply, but also because of its design and shape, which can have a positive effect on your aerodynamics.

Cool or keep cool

The insulated sleeve (25 g) of the hydration bladder has been specially developed to keep drinks cool while riding. Thanks to the mesh back plate of the race hydration pack, you can even take an ice-filled bladder with you to cool yourself down on hot rides.

Breathability

The No Dancing Monkey system is characterised by its fixed straps and the back-friendly back made of 3D mesh fabric. These materials are designed to ensure a high level of breathability, while a silicone coating is intended to provide an even better grip.

Nylon made from marine plastic

The USWE Race 2.0 bike backpack is mainly made of nylon made from recycled marine plastic - such as old fishing nets.

USWE hydration pack in the test

The USWE Race 2.0 hydration pack has been specially developed for racing and sporting activities. It offers excellent stability on the back, even in a strongly bent position on the bike. Whether riding downhill or braking, the rucksack stays securely in place and does not slide towards the head.

A big advantage of the Race 2.0 is its low weight. When there is only one litre of liquid left in the hydration bladder, you hardly feel the backpack on your back. In addition to the hydration bladder, the small rucksack also offers space for a practical insulation bag, which is particularly useful in summer.

However, you should bear in mind that not too much additional equipment will fit in the rucksack. The inner zip pocket may be almost as big as the entire rucksack, but if you have stowed a mini tool in it, for example, it will be difficult to get the bladder back in - or, conversely, your debit card, keys and mobile phone.

This is not a problem, especially for use on a gravel bike, as there is usually a small or larger bag attached to the bike to store tools, bars and other items. The white colour of the rucksack makes perfect sense in summer (it prevents overheating from the sun), but in the long term it is just as susceptible to dirt and sun cream residue on the skin.

Conclusion on the USWE Race 2.0

The USWE Race 2.0 hydration pack is the ideal companion for anyone who is travelling and doesn't want or need to take a lot with them. With a large 2-litre hydration bladder, it offers sufficient space for liquids. The NDM strap system ensures that the rucksack sits securely on the back, even when moving quickly. Thanks to the mesh material in the straps and the back section, pleasant cooling is guaranteed. So nothing stands in the way of summer!
