Minimal programme instead of toolbox: nothing should go wrong in a marathon. Actually. But what if it does? Nine emergency aids for road cyclists tested. (TOUR 5/2007)

Lighter is faster, and less is better. The most important measures against unnecessary weight in the tool bag are therefore a thorough look at your own bike - and a dose of optimism. How likely is it that you'll need to readjust the pedal release hardness, replace the derailleur hanger or dismantle the brake lever on the road? Very unlikely, if you were smart enough to ride the bike for at least 200 kilometres in competition setup before the start. Clever repairs then fall under "residual risk". What remains is little: owners of a well-maintained bike only have to reckon with adjustments to the stem, handlebars, seat post, saddle, brakes and gears. If things go wrong, loose bottle cages, cranks or pedals may have to be tightened. All of this can be done with surprisingly few resources.
