Wrap handlebar tape? That's easy, everyone thinks, I can do that. And promptly starts to fiddle about: Do you start at the top centre or at the end of the handlebars? And how do you get round that stupid brake lever? And at the end in the centre of the handlebars - where do you cut the tape again? Just have a look here...

Wrap handlebar tape? That's easy, everyone thinks, I can do that. And promptly starts to fiddle about: Do you start at the top centre or at the end of the handlebars? And how do you attach the end plug to the tube so that it stays in place? And how do you get round that stupid brake lever? And at the end in the centre of the handlebars - where do you cut the tape again? Just have a look here...

Degree of difficulty: for everyone

You will need:

  • Tool: Scissors
  • Material: Handlebar tape, insulating tape, cleaning solvent, coarse fabric tape, cloth

TIP 1
Do not wrap the tape from the top of the handlebar centre - this may look nicer at first glance, but experience has shown that the tape tends to slip in the high-stress area of the upper handlebar arch.

TIP 2
Handlebar tape wrapping takes time and leisure. Don't start when your cycling mates are already rolling up. Don't despair if you have to unwind the tape a few more centimetres. Even experienced racing mechanics correct the course of the tape several times before it fits perfectly.

TIP 3
The adhesive end strips supplied are often made of brittle and poorly adhesive tape. Better: insulating tape or textile adhesive tape.

1. fold the brake lever rubbers forwards and unwind the old tape. Clean the handlebars with petrol or white spirit and allow the agent to evaporate completely. If the handlebars are discoloured or corroded in places, ask your dealer for advice as to whether the part can still be used.
