Cycling shorts are usually cleaned daily, the pads in the helmet less often - but the handlebar tape? It gets dirty undisturbed. Cleaning it a few times is fine, but a new tape more often is also nice. Here are some tips for the right wrapping technique.

TIPS

- Use soap or hand wash paste with abrasive particles and scrub the moistened handlebar tape by hand. Wipe with a damp cloth and dry with a cotton cloth. The tape is then almost as good as new.

- Do not wrap the tape from the top of the handlebar centre downwards. This may look nicer at first glance, but experience has shown that the tape slips quite quickly in the upper handlebar bend.

- Wrapping beautifully takes time. To make sure it fits perfectly, you have to unwind the ribbon a few centimetres from time to time.

- The sealing strips supplied are often inelastic - commercially available insulating tape is more suitable.

And this is how it works:

Fold the grip rubbers forwards and unwind the old tape. Clean the handlebars with white spirit or petrol. Do not use harsher cleaning agents, especially on carbon fibre. Allow the cleaning agent to evaporate completely. Check the surface of the handlebars for discolouration or corrosion. If you have any doubts, consult your bike dealer.
