Workshop: Lighting and reflectors on road bikes
In the dark season, many road cyclists mutate into invisible beings, putting themselves and others in unnecessary danger. TOUR shows you how to get good light on your bike.

Level of difficulty: for everyone

Tool:
- Torque spanner
- Hexagon socket
- Knife or wire stripper
- Vice and pliers

Excipients:
- Cable ties

TIPS

This is the law
- Front light and spotlight
- Rear light and reflector
- Large-area reflectors
- Side reflectors
- Pedal reflectors to the front and rear

On racing bikes, the lights may be operated by a dynamo or powered by a battery or rechargeable battery and can be switched on separately. It is important that all parts are approved, recognisable by the test mark "K", the wavy line and a number.

Progress: The progress in lighting technology in recent years has been enormous. Hub dynamos and LED lights (50 lux and more) allow good visibility and visibility even at road bike speeds.

Charge: Li-ion batteries have no memory effect: The battery can be charged regularly, even when partially empty, without damaging it.
damage to it. For longer storage periods, the battery should be
half charged, as this is when it degrades the least. Check the charge level occasionally.

Adjustment: On the website of the manufacturer Busch & Müller (www.bumm.de) you will find a calculator under the menu item "Dealer info" that will help you to calculate the correct front light setting.

The detailed instructions for sufficient lighting at the front, rear and reflectors can be found below as a PDF download.
