Aerodynamic system wheels look fast even when stationary - but they need a little attention to make them work as smoothly as standard wheels. Here's how it's done:

Degree of difficulty: feasible for everyone

You will need:

  • Tool: Valve tool, possibly a small open-end spanner, insulating tape, socket spanner, centring spigot

Tips and tricks for system impellers

TIP 1: The rapidly growing variety of system wheels makes it difficult for specialist dealers to keep all spoke types in stock as spare parts. Therefore, when buying new wheels, order a number of suitable spare spokes at the same time.

TIP 2: Remember the spare tubes in your saddlebag! If the valve is too short, your ride could be over after a puncture. Tubes for clincher tyres are available with shafts up to 60 millimetres long, for tubular tyres with 35 millimetres. Don't forget adapters and tools!

1. tyre and inner tube manufacturers as well as rim and wheel suppliers work with adapters to solve the problem of short valves on high profile rims. Of the many possibilities, only the screw-in valve stem extension (the two models on the right) is actually recommended. This keeps the valve tight and easy to operate.
