Noises on a road bike can usually be attributed to friction, play, dirt or a loose connection. It is crucial to carry out a systematic investigation, carefully observing what triggers the noise. Pedalling, standing up on the pedals, steering, braking and riding over uneven surfaces can each point to different potential causes. Loose brake discs, cracks, excessive bearing play and noises coming from safety-critical components require particular caution and, where necessary, professional assistance.
A road bike that rattles, creaks, groans, cracks or clatters is not necessarily faulty. Many noises are caused by normal movement between components: a seatpost moves within the seat tube, internally routed cables strike the frame wall, bearings move under load, or a brake disc vibrates in its mount. Nevertheless, no unusual noise should be ignored in the long term. Dirt, incorrect torque settings and the early signs of wear can develop into a more serious problem over time. Furthermore, cracks, loose brake pads or play in safety-critical components pose an immediate risk of a fall.
Troubleshooting therefore doesn’t start with a spanner, but with an observation: when does the noise occur? Only when pedalling, only when standing on the pedals, when steering, when braking, or even when riding over small bumps? Does it change when you’re seated or when you stand up out of the saddle? Does it only occur when applying a lot of force, only in wet conditions, or only after a long descent?
The road bike is then broken down into as many individual movements as possible. First of all, the bike should be checked whilst stationary. The front and rear wheels can be dropped separately onto the ground from a height of a few centimetres. This often allows you to roughly pinpoint any loose parts in the frame, rattling cables and loose fittings. We also recommend categorising noises into two groups: they are caused either by the load and movement of the bike or by the drivetrain. You should then work your way through the road bike from the rear to the front.
It is important to tackle one potential cause at a time. If you grease the bottom bracket, adjust the headset and remove the seatpost all at once, you won’t know afterwards which of these measures was successful. For carbon components, brakes, wheels and the drivetrain, the manufacturer’s specifications apply. A torque wrench is not a luxury item here, but an essential diagnostic and safety tool.
A single click can be heard with every turn of the crankset or whenever the pedals are pressed down hard. The noise is often attributed to the bottom bracket. In fact, however, there are numerous potential contact points in the drivetrain that could be causing it.
Firstly, you should check whether the noise also occurs when riding whilst standing. If it stops, the saddle and seat post are the most likely culprits. If it persists, check the pedals, cranks, chainrings, bottom bracket, cassette and rear wheel in turn.
The crank can be turned slowly on the assembly stand. A noise that occurs once per revolution is more likely to be caused by the crank, chainring or pedal. Irregular clicking under heavy load, on the other hand, may come from a clamp connection or a bearing. Short test rides, each with only one variable load, help to narrow down the cause.
Pedals are an often-underestimated source of noise, as they contain threads, bearings, axles and crank mounts all packed together in a confined space.
Remove the pedals, clean the threads, apply a light coating of grease and refit them to the specified torque. Check the chainring bolts in a criss-cross pattern. Check and secure the crank and bottom bracket in accordance with the relevant fitting instructions. A threaded bottom bracket can be cleaned, greased and screwed in correctly. With a press-fit system, the bearing seat and adapter must be checked. If there is play or the fit is incorrect, a professional workshop repair is often required.
A dry chain should be treated with a suitable chain oil. Damaged chains, bearings or derailleur pulleys should be replaced. A clicking noise from the drivetrain should never simply be remedied by applying ever-increasing torque. This can cause damage to overloaded carbon or aluminium components.
The creaking sound only occurs when the rider stands up out of the saddle and moves the road bike vigorously from left to right. When seated, it is barely audible, if at all.
To test a road bike whilst stationary, apply pressure to the handlebars. To do this, apply pressure alternately to the left and right sides of the handlebars. If the noise gets louder, the focus shifts to the handlebars, stem, steerer tube and headset. Next, apply lateral pressure to the rear wheel and check the through-axle.
Particularly with carbon handlebars, the clamps must not simply be tightened further. A suitable assembly paste may be used for carbon components. It is essential to follow the manufacturer’s torque specifications.
Clean the clamping surfaces, use assembly paste suitable for the material, and tighten the bolts evenly in a crosswise pattern. The headset preload is set correctly. The side stem bolts are then tightened to the correct torque.
If the noise persists, or if there are any visible cracks, dents or unusual deformations, the road bike must not be ridden any further. A professional inspection is required, particularly of the handlebars, stem, steerer tube and frame.
When turning the handlebars, there is a dry creaking or grinding noise. Occasionally, the noise can also be heard when braking with the front brake applied.
First, apply the front brake and move the road bike gently forwards and backwards. There should be no noticeable play between the frame and the fork. Next, slowly turn the handlebars from one stop to the other. If the noise moves with the steering movement, the headset, spacers, bearing cover or cable routing are likely to be the cause.
Remove the steering head, clean the bearings and contact surfaces, apply a thin layer of grease and then adjust correctly. Damaged bearings must be replaced. Cable stops can be treated with a suitable product. For cables routed internally, foam sleeves or special frame guides can be used. Depending on the design, some cables may need to be partially removed for this.
If there is not a large enough opening to allow for retrofitting, the cable routing will need to be professionally modified. Particularly in the case of fully integrated cockpits, work on cables and brakes should be left to a workshop.
The clicking noise occurs mainly whilst sitting, often when pedalling vigorously or when riding over uneven surfaces. It can also occur when the cyclist shifts their weight on the saddle.
First, whilst standing still, press down on the saddle and apply lateral pressure to it. If the noise disappears when you stand up on the pedals, the cause is most likely to be found in the saddle, seat post or seat tube.
Although road bikes are exposed to less dirt in this area than mountain bikes, water, sweat and fine road dust can still get into the clamps. With carbon seatposts, correct assembly is also particularly important.
Remove the saddle, check the saddle frame and saddle shell for cracks, clean the clamping surfaces and tighten the bolts to the specified torque. Remove the seat post and clean the seat tube thoroughly. Assembly grease may be suitable for aluminium seat posts. Carbon assembly paste is generally used for carbon seat posts. The manufacturer’s specifications are decisive.
If your road bike is fitted with an adjustable seatpost, do not use just any lubricant. Maintenance is required if there is play, a leak or noises coming from inside the seatpost.
The noise occurs when riding over bumps, braking sharply or when lateral forces are applied to the road bike. It may originate from the fork, the head tube, the seat stays or the rear triangle.
First, apply pressure to the road bike whilst it is stationary. Apply the front brake and move the handlebars slightly forwards and backwards. Then apply lateral pressure to the rear wheel and check the thru-axle. The seat post, bottle cage, mudguards and luggage rack, if fitted, are also checked individually.
Loose components must be tightened to the correct torque. Contact surfaces must be cleaned and, depending on the material, greased or treated with assembly paste. If there are any visible cracks, changes to the paintwork, dents or unusual play, the road bike must not be ridden any further. A professional inspection by the manufacturer, a dealer or a suitable testing laboratory is then required.
On cobblestones, poor-quality tarmac, or when you carefully set your road bike down on its tyres, the frame makes a clattering and rattling noise. Sometimes the noise only occurs when steering or braking.
The front and rear wheels are dropped onto the ground separately from a height of a few centimetres. The road bike is then shaken gently and the handlebars are moved. Loose bottle cages, mudguards, spoke magnets, cables and thru-axles are checked individually.
Cables must be secured using foam sleeves, suitable frame guides or special brackets. Care must be taken to ensure they are not kinked. Furthermore, there must be sufficient freedom of movement for steering, braking and the installation and removal of components.
Particular care is required when dealing with fully integrated cables. A cable laid too tightly can not only cause noise, but may also interfere with the steering or braking system.
A metallic clattering sound occurs when driving over uneven surfaces. When braking, the noise may disappear or change. A rhythmic clinking sound may also be heard when the wheel is turning.
The wheel is rotated whilst the brakes are inspected from the outside. The brake disc, brake caliper, brake pads, pad retaining pin and retaining clip are checked. The tightness of all brake disc and brake caliper fixings is then checked.
A rattling noise can also be caused by a loose bolt on the brake disc. The disc must then be checked immediately. You must not continue driving if any of the rotor, clamping or brake caliper bolts are loose.
Brake disc mountings are checked using the specified torque. In the case of a six-hole mounting, the bolts are usually tightened in a criss-cross pattern. The specifications vary depending on the manufacturer and system. The relevant manufacturer’s specifications always take precedence.
Damaged bolts, retaining rings or brake discs must be replaced. A bent disc must not be forced back into shape if this could damage the braking surface. After any work on the brakes, check that the disc rotates freely and that the brake caliper is correctly seated.
The brake squeaks, screeches or grinds when decelerating. The noise may only occur in wet conditions, after a long descent, or at very low speeds.
Firstly, it is important to distinguish between the two scenarios: if the noise only occurs in wet conditions, it may be normal for the time being. If it persists in dry conditions or if braking performance changes, the brake pads and brake disc must be checked.
Clean the brake discs using a suitable brake cleaner or isopropanol. Oily brake pads cannot be reliably salvaged by grinding them down, as the oil usually penetrates into deeper layers. They generally need to be replaced. New pads and brake discs must be bedded in according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
If braking performance deteriorates, the disc is severely worn or the noise is accompanied by vibrations, you should not continue riding the road bike until it has been checked.
The bike makes a creaking noise, the spokes rattle, or there is a regular clattering sound. The noise may occur when pedalling, when braking, or simply when riding over uneven surfaces.
The wheel is removed and turned slowly. During this process, check for lateral and vertical runout, as well as damaged spokes. Gently squeeze together two adjacent spokes at a time to get a rough idea of their tension. The hub bearings, thru-axle and freehub are also checked.
Loose spokes must be retensioned correctly. A damaged spoke must be replaced and the wheel then trued. Bearings with play must be adjusted or replaced. Thru-axles and cassette locknuts must be tightened in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. The fit of the valve should also be checked.
Cracks in the rim, hub or spoke hole are a reason not to continue using the wheel.
The noise is difficult to pinpoint and occurs under heavy loads or when riding over uneven surfaces. With carbon frames, it can be heard as a crackling, popping or dry grinding sound.
The frame, fork and fittings are inspected under good lighting for cracks, changes to the paintwork and dents. The road bike is checked not only for visual defects but also for play. Listening for noises by carefully dropping the bike from a low height can provide clues, but is no substitute for a safety check.
Any loose components must be tightened to the correct torque. If you suspect damage to the frame or fork, do not continue riding the road bike. A professional inspection by the manufacturer, retailer or an accredited testing laboratory is required. Cracking noises may indicate structural damage.
The noise only occurs when the motor is switched on, whilst receiving assistance, or at a high cadence. Possible noises include cracking, grinding, whirring, rattling or a periodic knocking sound.
Firstly, a distinction is made between motor-assisted and non-motorised operation. To do this, switch off the motor and ride the road bike without assistance. If the noise disappears when the motor is off, the motor, chainring mount, cranks, battery and motor protection should be checked more thoroughly.
Engine noise may occur in certain drive systems due to their design. The key factor is whether the sound changes, becomes louder, or occurs alongside play, a loss of power or error messages. Such changes should not be dismissed out of hand as typical of electric racing bikes.
Check the screws and retaining clips. The battery compartment, cover, sensor, motor protection and visible fixings are checked in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. A loose battery cover can be secured at the contact points using a thin, non-conductive cushioning material.
You should not open the engine yourself. If you hear grinding noises, notice increasing play, receive recurring error messages, experience a loss of power or hear noises under load, you should contact an authorised specialist workshop.
The chain rattles, the gears creak when you change them, or the rear derailleur clatters on rough tarmac.
First, check whether the noise occurs only whilst changing gears or continuously. Then check the chain, cassette, derailleur pulleys, derailleur hanger and cables. Rotate the chain backwards to identify any stiff or damaged links.
Clean, lubricate and check the chain for damage. Stiff links should be loosened or the chain replaced. The rear derailleur and derailleur hanger must be correctly adjusted. Loose links must only be treated with a suitable lubricant. If the chain or cassette is damaged, replacing them is safer than carrying out a temporary repair.
The at-home diagnosis comes to an end in the event of cracks, excessive bearing play, damage to brakes or carbon components, or problems with the e-road bike’s drive system. In such cases, a specialist workshop is required.
