Road bike workshop: Installing Bowden cables
Bowden cables are the communication lines between the rider, brakes and gears. Well-maintained, low-friction cables are crucial to ensure that the messages get through. TOUR gives tips on installation.

Level of difficultyfor experienced screwdrivers

Tool
- Side or cable cutter
- File or grinding disc
- Needle or very thin screwdriver
- Hexagon socket and torque spanner with bits

Auxiliary materials
- Insulating tape
- Grease

TIPS

- A matter of comfort: Some shift brake levers give you the choice of routing both cables at the front of the handlebars or one at the front and the other at the rear. Which is the better option depends primarily on the shape of the handlebars.

- Crosswise: On small frames, it can be advantageous to cross the cables in front of the head tube so that they do not kink between the handlebars and the cable stop on the down tube when turning. The front derailleur cable runs to the right side of the down tube, the rear derailleur cable to the left. To ensure proper function, cross the cables once again underneath the down tube.

- Reserve: Make sure that the stem is in the highest position when you adjust the length of the cables - otherwise it will no longer be possible to change the position of the handlebars without having to install new cables.

The detailed instructions for changing the Bowden cables can be found below in the download area.
