Train by train: To ensure that everything works well, the trains sometimes have to be swapped.
Even if it's annoying: Bowden cables are wearing parts that need to be replaced occasionally if brakes and gears are to function optimally. TOUR gives you the most important tips on how to replace worn-out ones.

Level of difficulty for talented hobby mechanics

Tool
- Side cutter or cable cutter
- File or grinding disc
- Needle or very thin screwdriver
- Allen key and torque spanner with bits

Auxiliary materials
- Insulating tape
- Grease

TIPS

- System differenceBowden cables for gears and brakes differ significantly and must not be interchanged or mixed with products from other manufacturers. Inner gear cables are slimmer and have a significantly smaller head. The outer shift cable housing is reinforced with wire in the direction of pull. Brake outer cables, on the other hand, are reinforced with a steel helix, which makes the cable somewhat more flexible.
- Bag of tricks: The different shift brake levers sometimes require special tricks to install the cables. Before dismantling, check the manufacturer's website under Service, Support or Download to find out how your system works.
- More way: The levers of mechanical Shimano gears open the furthest for cable installation if you first release the shift brake lever and then swivel it all the way inwards like a gear shift.
- Lubricant: Shimano applies grease to the cable housing as standard - from the side with the lettering. The lettering should therefore point towards the grips so that the grease is carried along by the inner cable.
