Metal parts on the bike that have been scratched by crashes do not necessarily need to be replaced if beauty is the primary concern. Solid manual work with a file and emery will also restore the lustre.

Degree of difficulty: for experienced polishers

Tool: Vice with aluminium jaws, drill with stand, polishing set, files, key files, disassembly tool
Auxiliary means: Emery cloth, hard wax, cloth

POLIER TIPS

  • Remove dirt and salt from machined aluminium parts regularly with clean water and protect them with hard wax after drying. This ensures that the unpainted surface remains sealed and beautiful for a long time. A permanent seal with clear lacquer would be desirable, but fails because the lacquer does not adhere properly to the polished metal surface.

  • Protect your eyes with safety goggles and wear work clothes when polishing. Aluminium dirt is removed during metalworking.

  • Scratched handlebars, stems and seat posts should be replaced for safety reasons. In the case of cranks and pedals, the repair option depends on how and where they are damaged. If in doubt, ask your cycle dealer.

  • When using a set of several polishing pastes and discs, you must observe the order of the discs, the agents and the recommended machine speed specified by the manufacturer of the set. The polishing is then carried out in stages and the surface becomes smoother with each processing step.

POLISHING SCRATCHES: HOW TO DO IT

1. remove the scratched part and dismantle it so that you can clamp it in a vice. It should not move during machining and must not be crushed at the same time. Please note that chips and fine aluminium dust are produced during the subsequent work. If these particles get into the mechanics of the component, its function may be impaired.
