Hub bearings survive autumn and winter better if they are regreased and precisely adjusted. With the standard conical bearing hubs from Shimano and Campagnolo, this is not rocket science, but purely a matter of feel - here's how it's done.

Degree of difficulty:
- for experienced hobby mechanics

Tool:
- Cone spanner, possibly tweezers

Auxiliary materials:
- Bearing grease, cotton cloth

TIPS:
- Control:
Refit the wheel in the wheel and allow it to rotate freely. Check the bearing play by moving the rim at right angles to the direction of rotation. If the wheel does not turn easily or if you can still feel play, you need to adjust it again.

- Seal:
A lot of grease makes mounting easier and seals the bearings. It only slightly impedes the smooth running of the bearing, as the bearings move at rather low speeds. Over time, some lubricant may ooze out, which you should wipe off.

- Protection:
Spray spray wax all round the hub, which has been cleaned with plenty of water and dried completely, or apply plenty of liquid hard wax to the spoke holes in the hub. This prevents corrosion and cracking, which can be caused by road salt or drying sweat.

- Solvable:
Apply a thin layer of grease to the body of the cassette freewheel and the screw thread of the fastening ring. This ensures that you can remove the sprocket even after thousands of kilometres.
