Aero rims, electric gears and hydraulic disc brakes: modern road bikes are becoming increasingly complex. But if something breaks, good advice doesn't have to be expensive! In the TOUR mechanic special, we show you all the tricks for the road and for the workshop. Also: chain oils and torque spanners put to the test.

The chain no longer runs smoothly over the sprockets, the front derailleur grinds, the drivetrain rattles or the brakes grind - all road cyclists are familiar with these problems. If you go to the workshop for every minor defect, you will end up spending a lot of money and losing valuable training time on your bike. But you can easily help yourself with the most common faults - TOUR shows you how on 31 pages with lots of illustrations.

You will find the following contents in our screwdriver special:

Repair instructions for road bikes:

  • Eliminating lateral runout from wheels
  • Servicing and adjusting hub bearings
  • Tyre fitting for tubeless and classic tube/sleeve combination
  • Repairing and readjusting grinding disc brakes
  • Adjusting rim brakes
  • Derailleur: Adjusting the front derailleur and rear derailleur
  • Changing the chain and replacing the cassette

Torque spanner and chain oils: Tests in the screwdriver special

You will find 18 chain oils in the TOUR comparison test. Cleaning and oiling the chain is the most common and compulsory exercise for road cyclists in order not to lose any pedalling power, to keep gear changes smooth and to prevent wear on the drive train.

A torque spanner is extremely useful for tightening screws on a bike. Modern carbon frames in particular can be damaged by over-tightening bolts - and bolts on aluminium components can also break. TOUR has tested eleven torque spanners for home use (39 to 258 euros) and six smaller models for travelling (19 to 90 euros) so that you don't get into this predicament.
