Degree of difficulty: for talented hobby mechanics

You will need:

  • Tool: Brush, centring stand, small round file, emery cloth
  • Excipients: Special tyre adhesive

ipps:

  • Fitting tyres requires patience and time. Trying to glue new tyres the day before a competition can be dangerous. Careful fitting takes place in many steps, with the tyre, adhesive and rim needing time to rest in between. With new rims or certain adhesives, it can take up to a week.
  • Adhesive tapes do not hold the tyre securely on the rim, especially in summer temperatures or when braking is very hot. A bed of several layers of liquid tyre adhesive is much better.
  • Wear work clothes that can get dirty and work with the window open so that solvent vapours can escape immediately.

Preparation

 1. new rims can be very smooth, carbon rims can even be clear coated. Therefore, roughen the surface slightly with coarse emery cloth. Clean grease or oil from the rim bed with white spirit or petrol. Allow the solvent to evaporate completely before you start fitting the tyres.
1. the easiest way to apply the glue is to clamp the wheel in a centring stand or in an old fork in a vice. If you are already experienced, you can glue directly from the tube; for everyone else, a brush with stiff bristles makes the job easier.

Gluing

Press the tyre to the side at the point opposite the valve until a gap forms. Push a plastic tyre lever into this gap and then lever the tyre down.
