Shift brake levers and Bowden cables have long since become integral parts of the handlebars - they help determine grip comfort. And despite differences in function, the manufacturers' components have become surprisingly similar when it comes to installation. Here you can find out how to fit them and what you should bear in mind with carbon handlebars.

TIPS

- With the new shift brake levers from all manufacturers, you can mount both cables in front of the handlebars, or one at the front and the other at the rear. How you do it depends primarily on the handlebars used.

- Shift and brake cables must not be interchanged or mixed. Inner shift cables are slimmer with a significantly smaller head. Outer shift cable housings are stiffened in the direction of the cable so that they are not compressed when shifting. In contrast, outer brake cable housings are helically reinforced, which makes them somewhat more flexible than the shifter cables.

- Lubricate the inner cables thinly by pulling them lengthwise through a portion of bearing grease between your thumb and index finger while pushing them through the sleeves and possibly the stops up to the brake or rear derailleur.

Mounting the handle on the handlebar:

Release the shift levers completely by repeatedly pressing the operating buttons towards the smaller sprocket on both shift brake levers. This is the only way to insert the cables into the correct position on the shift cable reels.
