A question of posture: the right riding position on a road bike
It's not just newcomers to road cycling who all too often suffer unnecessary pain. The cause is usually an extremely flat riding position modelled on that of professional cyclists. We show you how to do it better.

Level of difficulty for everyone

Tool

- Allen key; a torque spanner with corresponding bit inserts is recommended
- folding rule
- spirit level

TIPS

- Basic rule saddle height: The knee must not be fully extended in any crank position. Multiply your inside leg length (crotch height) in centimetres by 0.885 - this gives a measurement for the saddle height above the centre of the bottom bracket, which can be varied depending on the pedal system and in particular the position of the foot on the pedal.
- Basic rule handlebar height: The difference in height and the distance of the handlebars from the saddle determine the back angle and arm position. Sitting slightly more stretched with high handlebars is generally better than if the handlebars are closer to the saddle but significantly lower.
- Warning signals: If you mainly grip the handlebars at the top centre while riding and only occasionally grip the brake levers, this is an indication that the handlebars are too low and/or too far away. If you prefer to lower the tip of the saddle significantly, this may be a sign that the saddle is too high or the handlebars are too low.
