Eliminate noisesPhoto: Dirk Zedler
Cracking and creaking noises are often amplified on frames with large-volume tubes to create an annoying background noise. It is worth listening carefully around the handlebars and saddle

Level of difficulty

ToolHexagon socket spanner, torque spanner

Auxiliary materialsSpray oil, assembly grease, carbon assembly paste, silicone spray

TIPS

As the sound spreads across the entire frame, it is often difficult to localise the source of the noise. You should therefore systematically search for the assembly in question on a quiet street.

- Always check new screw connections after 100 to 300 kilometres using a torque spanner. Components settle a little, the bolt force decreases. In general, it makes sense to check the bolts every 2,000 kilometres or so if you mainly ride on good roads; on rough surfaces, more often. - Always check parts on the bike that you clean for cracks, deformation, discolouration and corrosion and replace any parts that are in doubt.

SOUND SCHOOL

Sometimes the type of noise already gives an indication of the cause:

Rattling: brake lever, tools in saddle bag; bag on saddle frame

Knocking: Steering bearing loose

Cracking: Bottom bracket, cranks, front derailleur on frame, pedal axle, dropouts, quick release not tight

Creaking: Pedal plates, saddle frame Scratching: Chain on front derailleur

Squeaking: Chain or derailleur pulleys run dry

Systematic search

Ride hands-free and pedal with varying degrees of force. If the noise stops, the cause may be in the handlebar stem area. Stop, grip the handlebars by the brake levers and alternately push and pull. If the noise cannot be produced in this way, the changed load on the saddle when riding hands-free may also be the cause.

Calm on the handlebars

Dismantle the clamping screws of the stem, remove the cover and ensure that the handlebars do not fall down. Clean all parts. For aluminium handlebars and stems, grease the head and thread of the bolts and tighten them evenly. The slot on the stem must be the same width at the top and bottom and parallel to each other before you tighten the bolts.

Calm on saddle and seat post

Spray lubricating spray - in this case one containing silicone - where the saddle cover is attached to the frame. Allow it to take effect and check again.
