Servicing disc brakes on a road bike
Disc brakes on road bikes have a number of advantages, but many cyclists are still unfamiliar with them. TOUR shows the most important tips and tricks - also for potential problems on the road.

Level of difficultyfor interested beginners

Tool
- Hexagon socket and torque spanner
- Screwdriver
- On the road: Minitool

Auxiliary materials
- Isopropyl alcohol, brake cleaner if necessary
- Water and soap
- Absorbent cloth
- Brake pad spacer
- rubber rings

TIPS

Throw away: Brake pads that have absorbed oil or grease cannot be cleaned. They must be replaced.

Venting: Bleeding the brakes is a job that requires experience, patience and special tools. In TOUR 2/2015 you will find an example of instructions for Shimano brakes.

Brakes: Continuous braking heats up the system excessively. Brake briefly and sharply before corners and then continue rolling with the brakes open. Under heavy riders, on particularly hot days and on long, steep descents, the brake system can heat up so much that performance decreases. In such a case, you must stop and allow the brakes to cool down.

Lubricate: Be careful when using chain spray and lubricating oil on your road bike so that no lubricant gets onto the brake discs.
