Changing the chain on a road bike: We show you what to look out for and how to fit it successfully.
Alongside the tyres, the chain is the number one wearing part on a road bike and needs to be changed often. Assembly and fastening require a lot of care. We show you how it's done - for Shimano, SRAM and Campagnolo as well as with a chain lock and rivet pin.

Wrenching tips for changing the chain on a road bike

Chain width: Make sure that the chain width matches the drivetrain exactly. In times of ten-, eleven- and even twelve-speed drivetrains on mountain bikes, the differences are barely visible to the naked eye.

Time for a change: Depending on the weather, riding style and maintenance, a chain is so stretched after 2,500 to 6,000 kilometres that you should replace it. If you skimp on the chain, you will damage the sprocket and chainrings - and it will be expensive. It's better to invest in a device that reliably determines chain wear.

Tool: Without the right tools, fitting the new chain becomes a safety risk. If you are afraid of buying the special tool, it is better to have the chain
the chain at the dealer.

Auxiliary tool: To determine the chain length and when fitting the chain, a piece of bent spoke is helpful.

Chain length: The correct chain length is important! Chains that are too long rattle and can jump off, chains that are too short can pull the rear derailleur into the spokes or break if the chain is running at an unfavourable angle.

Taboo zones: A chain must not be reopened at the point of the connecting pin! The chain would be unsafe after re-riveting! Re-riveting is only possible with a new Shimano eleven-pin rivet, for Campagnolo with the Ultra-Link spare part. SRAM ten- and eleven-speed chain locks can no longer be opened. If the chain needs to be removed, use a chain tool to push out a pin on the locking link. Re-locking is possible with a new chain lock.

Shortening ban: On Campagnolo chains, a warning is attached to the end with the outer plates. These outer plates are prepared for riveting and must not be shortened.

Chain length: SRAM recommends running the chain over the large chainring and the largest sprocket and past the rear derailleur on SRAM drivetrains. Pull the chain together at the bottom. Add one complete link and the chain lock. In our experience, it is nevertheless advisable to also check the chain length using the methods described on page 55.
